About the Laboratory
The Hepatology Laboratory is part of the Academic Department of Hepatology of the University of Edinburgh. It was established in 1996 to promote basic science in hepatology. The laboratory's research activity has substantially expanded over the last 5 years following a number of successful grants.
The laboratory has close links with the Centre of Inflammation Research, Department of Pathology, the Hugh-Bennet laboratories and the MRC Imaging Unit withinin the University of Edinburgh. The laboratory also collaborates with a number of European Centres of excellence (University of Amsterdam, University of Rennes, University of Berlin, University of Naples) in the development of a bioartificial liver support system through a European Consortium Project Grant.
The focus of research in the laboratory is liver cell biology.The main research themes are: hepatocyte bioenergetics, role of stem cells in hepatic regeneration following liver injury, effect of liver injury on hepatocyte adhesion , optimisation of the hepatocyte component of bioartifial liver support systems.
